How do I request an item?
Once you have found an item on the Library catalog, you can find the item’s current status or location by scrolling down the page to the “Copy/Holding Information”.
- If there is not a copy available, you may request a hold through the online catalog. Once the hold is placed, the next available copy will be held for you.
- The following statuses describe unavailable items:
- Checked out
- Item Missing
- Item Being Held
- Newly Acquired
- On Order
- If there is a copy available, please call the Reference Desk at 801-852-6661 or the Children’s Reference Desk at 801-852-6682 and a Librarian will locate the item for you and hold it for you for one day.
- The following statuses describe available items:
- Checked In
- Sorting Shelves
- To request a hold on an item:
- With the item’s information showing in the online catalog –
- Click the “Hold Request” button on the right of the screen just above “Copy/Holding Information”
- Enter your library card barcode and PIN.
- Click “Login”.
- On the “Request Conformation” page , click “Request”.
- Take note of “Your hold queue position” which indicates how many holds have been requested before yours.
- You can now return to searching with or without logging out of your account.
- You will be notified by phone or email when the item is ready for you to pick up. Your item will only be held for 4 days, so be sure to pick up the item as soon as possible after being notified.
- You can cancel your hold by calling the Circulation Desk at 801-852-6679.
Renewal Options at the Provo City Library
Items may only be renewed once.
DVDs and videos are not renewable.
Items requested by another patron will not renew.
- Renew online.
- In the Library Catalog, select the “My Account” Tab.
- Enter your library card barcode and PIN; click on the login button.
- To see a list of all items checked out on this account, select “Checked Out”.
- Checkmark the items you wish to renew and click on the renew button.
- A message will indicate if any items failed to renew.
- Call the Circulation Department at 852-6660. You may speak with a clerk during library hours or connect to our automated phone renewal system 24/7. Please have your library card on hand when you call.
- Ask staff at the Circulation Desk to renew your items.
- Renew at a Self Check Station.
- If items are NOT present:
- At the Self Check, scan your library card and enter your PIN. Select “Renew Items” at the bottom of the screen. From the list of all your checked out items, select the ones you want to renew. Select “Renew Items.” Print a receipt.
- These items are due in 3 weeks and are not eligible for renewal, unless brought into the library.
- If an item has been requested by someone else or has already been renewed once, it will not renew – the due date will remain the same. A list of items that could not be renewed will show on your receipt.
- If items ARE present: (use this method if the items have already been renewed once)
- This is essentially checking in and then checking out the items to you again.
- At the Self Check, scan your library card; place items to renew on the reader pad. Items will check in and then check out to you again. Print a receipt.
- These items are due in 3 weeks and are eligible for renewal, if not requested by another patron.
- Warning: If an item has been requested by someone else, it will check in, but will not check out to you again. Please return it to the Circulation Desk immediately. It will already be on hold for the requesting patron.
